Phoebe Hearst Preschool | A Day in the Life
PHOEBE HEARST PRESCHOOL

Food Philosophy

Food is deeply integrated into our preschool culture in the way children learn and connect with one another, and how they are nourished. We are building a Playground-to-Table program that integrates gardening, cooking, nutrition, and art and creates endless opportunities for learning. Children get to taste-test different varieties of local produce, watch butterflies grow in their classroom and release them in the playground, grow herbs in the garden that they harvest and use to make their own pesto, and so much more. We strive to create a positive food environment where children are given the tools to make their own healthy eating choices, are curious about the natural world around them, and are continually exposed to new ingredients and cuisines.

We serve snacks and meals family style, creating time for conversation, relationship-building, and community. Our menus are thoughtfully designed each month to be seasonal, balanced, and nourishing, while still exciting for young eaters.

Children with allergies or special diets have meals customized to them in order to make every child feel included and nurtured. The majority of our meals and snacks are scratch-made, and our fruits and vegetables are organic and sourced from local farms as much as possible. Snacks include whole grain mini muffins, smoothies and agua frescas, homemade fruit sauces and jams like pear sauce and peach jam, and hummus or white bean dips with crudite.
